Medical Requirements To Qualify For Social Security Disability

These requirements apply for SSD and SSI benefits:

  • Must meet requirement of the SSA’s impairment listing
  • Impairment must prevent you from working at present and any previous jobs
  • Impairment must prevent you from performing any other job that would gainfully employ you, considering your education, age and skills
  • Impairment must have lasted or be expected to last for at least one year

Financial Requirements To Qualify For Social Security Disability

Obtaining SSD benefits from the SSA will prove difficult if you could reasonably support you and your family while maintaining gainful activity or employment with your current condition. However, if your condition is worsening, you should speak with a lawyer about the most opportune time to apply for benefits as soon as possible.

If you are applying for SSI benefits, you may meet the requirements if you meet the following conditions:

  • You are disabled and have never worked
  • You are disabled and have not worked long enough to qualify for SSD benefits
  • You are disabled, worked at one point and were eligible for SSD benefits, but are not eligible for SSD now because you haven’t worked in a long time
  • Your assets are worth no more than $2,000 (individual) or $3,000 (married couple)

Your coverage for SSD benefits can lapse, and at that point, you will need to apply for SSI benefits. Children with physical and mental impairments may also be eligible for SSI benefits.
