Schizophrenic disorders are covered by Social Security Disability

There are many different kinds of disabilities that could affect you, and it’s important that you still have the financial support you need while trying to deal with a life-changing diagnosis. Social Security Disability (SSD) is there for people with physical and mental health conditions.

One of the conditions that does qualify under the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) rules is schizophrenia and the schizophrenic spectrum. Schizophrenia is a long-term mental disorder that leads to a breakdown in the relationship between your behaviors, thoughts and emotions. Some people struggle with inappropriate actions or withdrawal from reality while others have a sense of mental fragmentation or mistake fantasy for reality.

This is a severe diagnosis, but because it’s so severe, it’s much easier to obtain disability payments with this condition. You need to present medical documents that show you have suffered from grossly disorganized behavior, disorganized thinking, hallucinations or delusions or catatonia. You also need to show that you have been limited because of the disease in that you have a limitation in how you interact with others, concentrate or maintain pace, manage yourself or understand or apply information.

If those do not apply but you can show that your mental disorder is serious and persistent, then providing two years of documentation and a history of medical and mental health assistance will help you obtain SSD. Your attorney can help you collect all the documents you need and submit them to the SSA. If you are denied SSD, your attorney can help you appeal the decision, so you can focus on your health.
