Benefits for Family Members

Dependent Family Members and SSD Benefits

Family members benefit from you being able to work and earn a regular income. By the same token, when you can’t work because of a disabling medical condition, your family suffers financially.

Fortunately, if you are eligible to receive Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, your dependents may qualify for benefits too. In fact, the monthly payment for one of these eligible family members could be equal to as much as half of what you receive for your disability.

This can make a huge difference.

And at Midwest Disability — you’ll find the guidance and effective legal representation you need to obtain disability benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA) as the family member of a disabled individual.

Family members who may qualify for SSD benefits based on your work history include:

  • A spouse, aged 62 or older
  • A spouse (any age) who is caring for a child of yours younger than age 16 or who is disabled
  • Unmarried minor children, including adopted children, and in some cases, stepchildren or grandchildren too (18-year-olds can qualify if attending an elementary or secondary school full-time)
  • Unmarried and disabled adult children who became disabled before the age of 22
  • A former spouse who was married to you for at least 10 years, is not currently married and is at least age 62
