A Significant Amount Of Paperwork Is Needed For Your Claim

If you are applying for disability benefits, you will need a variety of information. You will need to have information about the condition that is keeping you from work. If you have had medical or psychiatric treatments, you will need to document that too, including your doctor's contact information. Your employment and earning history are also required.

Do Not Go Through This Alone

Michigan residents who suffer an illness or an injury that keeps them from working for at least a year might qualify for SSDI or SSI. However, once you apply for disability benefits, you are just starting a process that could take a year or longer.

After you file, you will be sent to Disability Determination Services. This is a state agency, where you will see a claims examiner who will decide if you are disabled. In about four months you will receive a letter with the determination. If denied, you will have to go through the appeals process.

You will have 60 days after you receive the letter that denies your claim to file a request for a disability hearing before an administrative law judge. This is the first step in the appeals process. The average wait time for the hearing is 14 months.
