Thousands of veterans disability claims were simply ignored

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has come under a lot of fire recently for not handling veterans disability claims quickly enough, or for mismanaging them. This has happened across the country, from Minnesota to California. However, a new report shows that things may be even more dire than people knew.

According to this report, the VA actually ignored a lot of the claims on purpose. Disabled vets sent in 13,841 letters in California, letters that the law says the VA has to read and respond to by providing those vets with applications for benefits. Instead of doing that, they allegedly just put them in a file cabinet and did nothing, ignoring them and forgetting about them.

Some of the letters had been there for more than a decade. One woman said that the letter her husband sent in was mailed in 2004, and she didn't get an answer for 10 years. On top of that, her husband passed away three years after sending in the letter, so the response was to a man who had been gone for seven years.

That woman did not get the benefits her husband was entitled to, she did not get his pension payments, and, when he passed away, the VA didn't even give her an American flag for the funeral, something that all vets are supposed to receive.

While this happened in California, it could happen anywhere, including Minnesota.

Have you been struggling to communicate with the VA or do you think your claim has been denied when it is valid? If so, we hope you'll take a look at our website to learn more.
