Being sent on missions and heading out for military work can be hard on the body. Physical and mental ailments aren’t uncommon, particularly in cases where soldiers go into combat. Between risky missions and combat-related situations, there are many reasons for those returning from war to struggle.
When you’re hurt at war, you could be part of a program known as the War Related Illness and Injury Study Center, or the WRIISC. This Veterans Association health care program has the mission of addressing any kind of post-deployment health concerns you have as a veteran. The WRIISC has focused on the needs of combat veterans, and those involved in care have many years of experience helping these Veterans who may have extensive deployment health concerns.
How do you become eligible for WRIISC?
On the whole, all combat veterans qualify for the WRIISC programs. Those with specific post-deployment concerns are also eligible for these programs. For instance, if you participated in the Shipboard Hazard and Defense Program, you would be eligible for this program.
If you find that you are eligible for the program, then you will need to obtain a referral. Any VA Primary Care Provider or Patient Aligned Care Team can get you this referral. Additionally, the referral may be made by an Environmental health care provider or post-deployment health champion.
Once you’re enrolled, you should be receiving the care you need for your illnesses or injuries. If you find that you can’t get enrolled even though you qualify, your attorney can help you appeal any decisions that are affecting your care.
