You may qualify for benefits if you're disabled

Once you qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you may also qualify for Medicaid, social services and help with purchasing food. Each of these benefits is open to those who have low incomes, disabilities and are in need.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, referred to as SNAP, is a program that helps people buy food. It used to be identified as a food stamp program, but today, the funds are placed on debit cards each month and can be used to purchase approved items.

Another program you may qualify for is Medicaid. Medicaid is a service that helps pay hospital bills and medical costs. Another medical benefit, Medicare, is often paid for by the state if you can show need. If you qualify, the state may pay for your deductibles or coinsurance. Those at the poverty level may be able to receive extra assistance for paying medical bills, for prescriptions and other medical needs.

Finally, if you qualify for SSI, you may also qualify for Social Security Disability (SSD). Disability benefits are paid to those who have suffered a disability that makes it hard to work or impossible to do so. Retirement benefits begin at age 62. Those who have paid into Social Security through their work histories qualify for those benefits.

Qualifying for SSI is the first step to knowing which benefits you have the right to obtain. Your attorney can help you apply the first time, so you have the best chance of having your application accepted. If you're rejected, you still have a right to appeal that decision and seek the benefits you deserve.
