If you’re applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), it probably has not slipped by you that it can be difficult to get. Many people are denied the first time they apply, because their documents are not in order or because of other issues. Fortunately, there are some tips that can help you apply for, and receive, these benefits the first time.
With these tips, you can increase your chance of being approved the first time you apply. Here are three tips to consider.
1. Determine your eligibility ahead of time
Before you ever apply, you should see if you qualify. You’ll need to prove that you’re unable to support yourself by working and that it’s difficult for you to learn a new job that you could support yourself with. You will need to show that your impairment is expected to last at least 12 months or that it will eventually lead to your death.
2. Work with someone familiar with the law
Another good tip is to work with a disability attorney. An attorney knows which steps to take to help you get approved the first time. He or she is familiar with the documents you need to submit to prove that you have a disability and can help you fill out any documents required by the Social Security Administration (SSA). By working with someone who has already helped others get approved, you’re increasing your chances to be approved as well.
3. Apply as soon as you can
Waiting only adds to your financial strain. It can take many months, and sometimes years, to get a disability benefits claim approval. Apply as soon as you can to avoid anxiety or frustration from the wait.
These are just three tips to help you get approved. Applying early, knowing that you’re eligible and working with someone familiar with law can help you get approved.
