Veterans have a right to disability benefits following injury

There are many conditions you may suffer from that are directly linked to your time in the military. Serving in the military has its upsides and downsides, with medical conditions and exposure to toxins being some of the major consequences of service.

Veterans and qualified dependents may obtain disability benefits if you currently suffer from an injury or illness that affects your mind or body. One of the two following statements must be true:

1. You had an injury or illness before you were in the military and serving worsened it

2. You developed an illness in the military and can link it to your time in the military.

For instance, if you are involved in a firefight, a common illness following that would be post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This condition can cause serious symptoms such as difficulty sleeping and night terrors. You may struggle with agoraphobia or be unable to work. This mental illness could qualify you for disability benefits. Your qualifying dependents, like your children, may also be able to benefit from disability payments in that case.

Remember, you must apply to receive disability benefits, which means there is a waiting period. It's a good idea to collect solid evidence of your condition and its link to the military before you submit your documentation. Your attorney can help you prepare your disability application, so you have the best chance of obtaining disability benefits on your first attempt.

If you are denied, don't be discouraged. You have a right to appeal any denial and seek the benefits that you are entitled to. Our site has more information.
