Can we cure spinal cord paralysis?

A spinal cord injury can leave you with paralysis that impacts you below the level of that injury. For some, this means the loss of the use of their legs. For others, it is everything below the neck. All injuries are different.

What is the same is that these injuries are typically considered incurable. There may be some healing initially after the injury, especially for those who get medical treatment and go to physical therapy. Healing does happen. But, when the body cannot heal on its own, medicine focuses more on helping people adapt because there is no cure.

But will that always be true? Many researchers do not think so. Just because we do not have a cure yet does not mean they will never find one. They are actually optimistic about the future, and they do think that a cure exists.

One woman who works in this field is herself paralyzed due to an accident, but she said that current medical research has seen "tremendous breakthroughs" and she firmly believes that "SCI will be reversed."

We may not be there yet, but she has seen how the science is progressing and the level of attention now being given to spinal cord injuries. She does think that attention needs to increase, but she feels that, when it does, it will enable researchers to find a cure. They are continually working toward this end. Remember, many other injuries and diseases that were once considered incurable now have useful treatment options. Perhaps SCI will be next.

In the meantime, those dealing with paralysis and related issues need to know what legal options they have.
