Can you work without losing Social Security disability benefits?

On Behalf of | Mar 12, 2021 | SSD - Social Security Disability Process And Benefits |

Having a disabling condition can be difficult for anyone. While Social Security disability benefits can certainly help qualifying individuals from a financial perspective, many people across the country want to get back into the workforce to regain a sense of independence. However, as they determine whether they can work, they do not want to lose their benefits.

Fortunately, the Social Security Administration has various programs available for individuals to try to get back into the workforce while still receiving benefits. These programs and options are often referred to as work incentives. The exact work incentive that suits a person’s particular situation will depend on the type of disability the person has and the type of work that person plans to undertake.

Some individuals currently receiving SSDI payments may want to look into a trial work period, which would involve:

  • Nine months in which the person can test his or her ability to work
  • Continued disability payments during this period
  • Continued existence of a disabling condition
  • A 60-month period in which to accumulate nine months of attempted work
  • Reporting work activity to the SSA

Other restrictions and requirements also apply to the trial work period. As a result, it is important that individuals interested in trying to get back in the workforce without losing their benefits fully understand what they need to do. Gaining information on this specific work incentive and others could help parties determine whether a specific work incentive offered by the SSA could help them get back to work without jeopardizing their Social Security disability benefits.
