The Social Security Administration has announced another update to its Compassionate Allowance List.

  • OPHN1 Syndrome
  • Primary Cardiac Sarcoma

The SSA created the Compassionate Allowances program to help people with certain serious medical conditions receive disability benefits more quickly. Compassionate Allowance conditions are medical conditions that are so severe that they clearly meet Social Security’s disability standards. The program allows the SSA to identify qualifying claims and expedite the disability determination process.

The Compassionate Allowances list now includes 314 conditions. It is largely made up of cancers and serious rare medical conditions. The list is periodically updated as the SSA identifies additional conditions that may qualify for expedited processing.

Having a condition on the Compassionate Allowances List does not necessarily mean that benefits are automatically approved. Claimants must still provide medical evidence confirming the diagnosis and demonstrating that they have a qualifying condition. The SSA may use medical records, laboratory results, imaging studies, pathology reports, and other documentation to verify the condition.

Disability claims involving qualifying conditions on the list can are usually processed much faster than standard claims. This can be particularly important for individuals facing serious illnesses who need financial assistance as quickly as possible. Since the SSA instituted the Compassionate Allowance List, more than 1.2 million people have been approved for disability benefits under the program.
