Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments cannot be garnished by either the federal government or creditors. However, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments can sometimes be garnished to pay a debt. Your SSDI payments can be garnished to pay federal income taxes, student loans, court-ordered child support, court-ordered alimony, court-ordered restitution to a crime victim; and some federally funded home loans. SSDI payments cannot be garnished by creditors, including credit card companies, most mortgage lenders, or auto-financing companies
