If you are awarded Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, you will be eligible for Medicare after a 24 month qualifying period. This 24 month period begins when you were found disabled, not when the decision was issued. So if you applied for disability alleging you became disabled a year prior to filing, and the decision was issued a year later, you would be eligibly for Medicare upon receiving the decision awarding you Social Security Disability Insurance benefits.
