You may already be familiar with the common workers’ compensation benefits like temporary wage‑loss, permanent partial or total disability benefits. Another type of benefit that you are entitled to but not as commonly understood is vocational rehabilitation services.
What is vocational rehabilitation?
Vocational rehabilitation services are a way to help an injured worker manage to make sense of their medical treatment and help rehabilitate them for a safe return to the workforce. A key player in these services include a Qualified Rehabilitation Consultant (QRC).
A QRC can assist with medical management, retraining, and/or job placement services. Your QRC can help coordinate your doctor’s appointments as they relate to your workers’ compensation claim, attend these appointments with you, and liaise with your treating provider regarding your treatment and restrictions. And if you need assistance looking for new employment, your QRC can assist you with updating your resume and helping you find jobs that suit your skill set and accommodate your restrictions. As long as you have restrictions, you are entitled to this service at no cost to you.
The goal is to get you the skills necessary to find you a job comparable to the one you left behind because of the injuries you suffered on the job.
What does retraining entail?
The current job market can make it difficult and frustrating to find and secure a new job comparable to your old one, even with the assistance of a QRC. Retraining makes a lot of sense in many cases, and you may be eligible for a retraining program of up to three years in length. Unfortunately, retraining is also expensive. Employers and workers’ compensation companies will frequently dispute these requests, but your team at Midwest Disability will advocate for you.
