SSI Recipients, Their Dependents, and Stimulus Payments

Over half of Americans have received their stimulus payment issued in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, millions are still waiting for their payment. Payments have not yet been issued to Americans that do not file taxes. This includes recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Recipients of SSI can expect to see their stimulus money in May. This money will arrive by the method that these induvial normally receive their SSI benefits

It should be noted that SSI recipients are also due $500 per dependent child. This money will not arrive until next year unless information about the dependent is furnished to the IRS. As it currently stands, this information must be provided by May 5, 2020. The required information can be furnished to the IRS by going online and utilizing the IRS website. On April 28, the Social Security Advisory Board wrote to the Commissioner of the Social Security Administration about the May 5 deadline and the short turn-around time between the May 5 deadline and its announcement on April 24. The Board's letter urges the Commissioner to continue his work with the Department of Treasury to seek elimination of this filing deadline.

The May 5 deadline also applies to recipients of Veteran's benefits. They too must furnish information about dependent children to the IRS by the May 5 deadline in order to receive the extra payment of $500 per dependent.
